Dr. Daryl Dichoso the Chief of Staff Elect of Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital and Medical Director (recently recognized as a 5-star facility by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). In his role at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land, he has transformed the hospital’s inpatient service over the past 10 years into a high-performing team of physicians who care for patients admitted to the hospital from the Emergency Room. During 2020 and 2021, he has also led his hospital team in caring for the sickest patients stricken with COVID-19 while maintaining the safety and health of his colleagues.
Dr. Dichoso oversees a team of approximately 20 board-certified physicians and participates in quality and improvement committees throughout the hospital. From 2015 to the present, Dr. Dichoso has been a member of the Medical Executive Committee at Memorial Hermann. He also serves on several system clinical program committees with the purpose of developing programs and protocols in keeping with high-quality care in the system.
Prior to joining Memorial Hermann, Dr. Dichoso cofounded one of the largest private hospitalist groups in Sugar Land. It served several of the busiest hospitals in the area from 2010 to 2015.
Dr. Dichoso was raised in Houston by his first-generation Filipino parents. His father, Carmelo, was among the first kidney specialists from the Nephrology Fellowship program at the Baylor College of Medicine. His mother, Helen, was an ICU nurse turned businesswoman. While attending the University of Houston, Dr. Dichoso became fascinated with molecular biology. This lead to an externship in molecular developmental biology focusing on mRNA-targeted gene inhibition studies at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland in 1993. Driven by the desire to be more involved with direct patient care, Dr. Dichoso attended medical school at the University of Santo Tomas in Sampaloc, Philippines.
Throughout his career, Dr. Dichoso has focused his practice on hospitalist medicine. Hospitalists are physicians who directly care for, and supervise, the vast majority of patients treated in a hospital inpatient setting, rather than in an outpatient clinic. His philosophy of care centers on the importance of a strong physician-patient relationship.
In service to the community, Dr. Dichoso supports Operation Smile, KNOWAutism, United Way, and the Chinese American Citizens Alliance Houston. He was also a member of the board of directors of KNOWAutism.
In recognition of his work, Dr. Dichoso has earned several professional awards. Among them are, Outstanding Male Physician, 2014; Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital Physician of the Year, 2014; and the Award for Excellence in Quality and Safety, 2018.
Dr. Dichoso’s service extends beyond the hospital setting into the community through webinars and other public educational activities covering a variety of topics. In the past year, he has given several community based lectures and webinars on COVID-19. Most recently, Dr. Dichoso has rectified the flood of misinformation with regard to COVID-19 therapies and vaccines and the use of masks in public spaces.
Dr. Dichoso; his wife, Amy, a real estate agent; and their three children, Bryan, Conrad, and Alana are proud residents of Sugar Land. He remains dedicated to maintaining the highest quality of care at the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land and Katy Hospitals and continues the fight against COVID-19 in the community. Dr. Dichoso is also committed to mentoring young physicians and takes pride in ongoing efforts to educate the nursing and ancillary staff. His dedication and experience continue to drive him to maintain the highest level of safe and effective treatment of patients in the hospital and in the community.
It is for all the reasons mentioned above, and many more, that Dr. Daryl Dichoso has been named a Top 20 Inspiring Man Impact Maker for 2022.
