The wine cellar at Tony’s was a hive of activity on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, as host committee members, along with friends and supporters, gathered for a kickoff luncheon to prepare for the Mission of Yahweh’s (the Mission) Second Annual Leaders & Legends Gala, Building Hope for the Future. The gala will take place on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., at the River Oaks Country Club. The event will benefit the Mission, a faith-based shelter that empowers, enriches, and restores the lives of homeless women and children.

Gala cochairs, Christine Johnson and Jody Merritt, hosted the luncheon. They were joined by two of the gala honorary chairs, Samantha Kennedy and Saula Valente, in welcoming the community leaders in attendance. The order of the day was to assist with the framework for donations for the gala’s building block prizes and big board, not to mention the live auction, which will be led by Johnny Bravo.

Community leaders, Brigitte and Bashar Kalai, Lori and Todd King, Larry Martin, Janelle and Greg Reid, and Laura and Dave Ward, all of whom made generous gifts to build and furnish the Mission’s new campus dormitory, will be recognized at the gala. The importance of the new structures that have been made possible by their generosity can’t be overstated. They will make an immediate impact on the community by providing a loving and safe environment and building hope in the lives of many more homeless women and children.

The permanent supportive-housing project will house over 40 women and children at the Mission’s Spring Branch area campus in Houston. In partnership with, and through, in-kind donations and pro-bono services from HomeAid Houston, David Weekley Homes, Greater Houston Builders Association, Rivers Barden Architects, and Unicorn Service Solutions, each of the 2700 square-foot buildings will include eight rooms for a total of 16 that will contain a living space, bedroom, and private bathroom. Currently,  the Mission’s 12-building campus can house 120 homeless women and children. The new addition will increase capacity by 40 to 50 residents served.
