Rashmi and Sunny Sharma understand the importance of community and are committed to stepping up to help others in a variety of ways.

Rashmi received her BA from Delhi University and her MA in French from Jawaharlal Nehru University in India. In 1978, she moved to the United States and began working in the Central Services Department of St. Luke’s Hospital. When her children were school-aged, Rashmi served on several PTOs at various schools. She also worked with special needs children at Dulles Schools. In 1989, she began serving the community by joining the Rotary Club with Sunny, as well as becoming involved with several nonprofits. To be more effective in this capacity, Rashmi completed the nonprofit boards executive board program at Rice University.

In 2001, Rashmi saw the need to help women of every race and background who had experienced, or were experiencing, abuse and co-founded Asians Against Domestic Abuse (AADA). The nonprofit assists women with securing housing and finding a job. AADA also provides them with legal, financial, and housing support. To date, Rashmi herself has helped raise over $100,000 for the organization. She served as President from 2015 to 2020.

Rashmi is a charter member of Rotary Community Corp in Rotary District 5890 and has hosted several business and friendship exchange members from other countries in her home. Furthermore, she has visited a number of countries on friendship exchange trips and has also hosted youth exchange students and ambassadorial scholars in her home. She was a board member of Fort Bend Women’s Center from 2009 to 2015, a board member of University of Houston Sugar Land from 2009 to 2011, and a board member of Fort Bend Lawyers Care from 2009 to 2011.

Sunny received his BS from India, his MS from Mississippi State University, and his MBA from University of Houston. He founded Sunbelt Medical Corporation in Houston as President and CEO in 1989. He is also the owner of Medical Tectronics, Inc. Prior to owning these enterprises, Sunny held positions at St. Joseph Medical Center, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, and  Texas Heart Institute. He also founded Medical Enterprises International, which he later sold to Medical Systems Support, Inc.

A sought-after speaker, Sunny has delivered addresses at the International Healthcare Conference in Dubai and at the 49th Annual ENT Conference in Mumbai. He also taught business and management courses at Houston Community College for a number of years and has been published in numerous healthcare journals.

Sunny’s professional and civic affiliations are abundant and too many to mention here. A small sample includes: founding member and President of City of Sugar Land’s Legacy Foundation, founding member of Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston, founding member of Indo-American Forum of Fort Bend, chairman of World Chamber of Commerce Texas, chairman of Texas West Africa Chamber of Commerce, vice chair of Helping A Hero board, and board member of Houston Mayor’s International Trade and Development Council - Middle East and North America.

Sunny joined Rotary in 1985 to serve communities. He has been President of numerous Rotary Clubs, has served as a Rotary International District Governor for the Houston area, and has participated in several domestic and international service projects. In acknowledgement of his dedication to Rotary, he has been named Rotarian of the Year for District 5890, has been the recipient of the Citation for Meritorious Service, and has received the Rotary International’s highest award: “Service above Self.”

A sample of other recognitions Sunny has received includes: International Innovator of the Year from The World Chamber of Commerce; 2019 Beacon of Light from the World Affairs Council and the University of Houston Law Center; and June 11, 2010 was declared Sunny Sharma Day for his humanitarian efforts by the Harris County Judge, the Mayor of Houston, the Fort Bend County Judge, the Mayor of Sugar Land, and the Mayor of the City of Bellaire.

Together, Rashmi and Sunny were named Humanitarian of the Year in 2013 for their charitable contributions to Fort Bend County and the city of Houston. Their devotion to the community is exceeded only by their devotion to their family. Rashmi and Sunny are the proud parents of sons Sanjay, Rajan, and Roshan, successful citizens in their own right.

It is for all the reasons mentioned above, and many more, that Rashmi and Sunny Sharma have been named a Top 20 Power Couple Impact Maker for 2022.
